Why go outside in the cold when you can bring the snow in?

Last night Central Oregon was hit with a snow storm, very uncharacteristic for mid-November. The temp didn’t rise about 23 today and it was too cold for the chimps to go outside, so we brought the outside in for them. We filled kiddie pools with snow, added forage, cinnamon and crystal light powder to basically turn them into giant snow cones, and then threw in some toys and gardening tools for fun. The chimps were thrilled. Play with snow AND be warm at the same time? Yes please! It was really interesting to watch them play with the pools because they each had very different methods. Thiele reached right in and stuffed handfuls of snow into her mouth; CJ used a shovel to scoop out the snow and spoon it into her mouth; Herbie and Jackson didn’t even bother with their hands, they just took giant bites straight out of the pool with their butts sticking straight up in the air. It was a blast for the chimps, as well as the people who got to watch them enjoy it. What a fun way to spend a cold day with the chimps!
