What is a sanctuary?

A wildlife sanctuary is a place of refuge where abused, injured and abandoned captive wildlife may live in peace and dignity for the remainder of their lives.

True wildlife sanctuaries do not breed or exploit for commercial activities (including, but not limited to: use of animals for entertainment or sport, sale or trade of animals, their offspring or animal parts and by-products.)

DSC_8722A true sanctuary respects the integrity of individual animals, providing safe, healthy and secure refuge in enclosures which have been specifically designed for the unique animal which it supports.

It is estimated that there are approximately 1,200 exotic animal facilities which provide the most minimum of care for thousands of animals with little or no knowledge of the animals’ basic needs, including nutritional and behavioral requirements. Unfortunately, these facilities often breed animals to provide ‘cute babies’ for sale or as an attraction for public display. Many of these animals depend on public sale of “treats” for their major source of food.

These facilities often operate as the end-of-the-line for surplus animals who can no longer earn money for circuses, zoos, traveling shows and even exotic pets. While they often call themselves “sanctuaries”, they continue to breed and exploit the animals in their care.  These facilities, known as “Pseudo-sanctuaries” attempt to cover themselves with the positive “sanctuary” label but most often use their animals as fund-raising tools with public appearances, photo sessions at local malls and even take the animal to televised shows and events pleading for funds.

At Chimps Inc., our rescued animals live in peaceful and natural habitats, free from fear, chains and harsh confinement. Our enclosures are individually designed to encourage natural behavior and our dedicated care staff monitors the animals 24/7, 365 days a year.

A true sanctuary should not be involved in breeding or commercial exploitation of the animals in its care. Our animals are not bred, traded, sold, rented or forced to perform.

With the exception of a limited number of planned educational and fundraising events held annually, Chimps Inc. is not open to the public.
