Watermelon for Topo

Watermelon for Topo

Whole fruits (as opposed to chopped) are a fun surprise and change of pace for the chimps. They get so excited when they see whole pineapples, cantaloupes and watermelon around the enclosures, the pant hoots are almost deafening. Topo was especially excited about the watermelon distributed around the Garden enclosure this morning. He let out an excited hoot and went bounding into the enclosure as soon as the door was opened, snagging one giant watermelon and awkwardly carrying over to his favorite perch before anyone else had even entered in behind him. He cracked it open and happily buried his face in the dripping fruit, emitting excited squeaks and grunts as he slurped up the insides. When he finally paused to take a breath, which took longer than you’d think, he looked up at me with juice dripping down his chin and the goofiest grin plastered across his face. Then he let out another happy grunt and buried his face in the watermelon again, so clearly content and satisfied with the morning forage.

Thank you, Topo, for reminding us all how important it is to appreciate the little things in life!DSC_8960 4
