About Topo

The first chimpanzee to make his home at Chimps Incorporated, Topo, who weighs about 200 pounds, has since reigned as the alpha male at our continuously growing sanctuary.  After about twenty years of adjusting to numerous residences, dwelling in small, windowless cages in roadside zoos, and working in the entertainment industry, Topo came to us from New York State with the hopes of beginning a new, peaceful life in October of 1995.

Although we were unable to obtain his official date of birth, we estimate that he was born in the early- to mid- 1970's.  Despite his somewhat mysterious past, we nevertheless celebrate his birthday every year on November 16.

While we suspect that Topo had not experienced the outdoors before he joined us, he now enjoys a pleasant chase around he enclosure and a good laugh when he sees his human friends.  Even though Topo did not socialize with other chimpanzees prior to his arrival, his natural instincts have prevailed.  As new members arrive at our sanctuary, his friendly demeanor immediately gains the admiration of both chimpanzees and humans.  For more than a decade, our community has respected him as the alpha male, and in return, Topo continues to watch over his family and to ensure their safety.
