Topo, Alpha and Protector

Topo, Alpha and Protector

After a long, cold winter, the chimps are ecstatic that the weather is finally warming up and spring is quickly approaching. Today was a beautiful, sunny, 70 degree day and everyone took full advantage of it by lounging in the shade, sunbathing in a nest of blankets, or romping around the Big Outdoors.  Right now Topo is lying in his favorite tower in the Front enclosure where he has a 360 view of the sanctuary.  As alpha male, Topo is always keeping an eye on the goings on of the sanctuary, and even when he is resting, he is always alert and watchful.  Topo exudes a sense of power and stability that is palpable to both his chimp and human companions.  The last time I walked past him, he was lying on his stomach, head resting on his arm, peacefully dozing in the shade, his eyelids fluttering as he drifted in and out of a nap.  As I approached, his eyes opened for a moment and focused on me; then he raised his head, took a quick look around to make sure nothing new was going on, and then laid back down and drifted off again.  It’s hard not to feel safe knowing that Topo is watching over us.
