Topo Tries Technology

Topo Tries Technology

Today while volunteering, between cleaning and making meals, I was finally able to see Topo give the new iPad a whirl! It’s so fascinating to view and think about the intersection of modern technology with the care of these ancient-seeming creatures. Of course, the chimps have all seen TV, radio and laptops, but this is a toy that actually plays back! Simple apps designed to help children learn and have fun have a similar effect on the chimps. They are at once fascinated and excited by the prospect of an object which is so much more than it seems. It’s an incredible enrichment, interactive and stimulating, with the ability to change so it will never lose its novelty. They say chimpanzees have the mental capacity of a small human child, that has never been easier to see than when watching chimps use an iPad. Topo, however, reminded me much more of watching my grandfather use an iPhone for the first time! You can’t eat the screen, Topo! Get with the times! Let’s hope the old man catches on soon.
