The Joy of Spring

The Joy of Spring

Sometimes waking up early in the morning to volunteer is tough. Even when it means you get to spend the morning with your favorite chimpanzees. Lately, however, there’s a bit of magic in the air. The birds are chirping all sorts of jazzy melodies; bees are even starting to make a buzz around the early blooms. The slightly greener grass is developing yellow dimples where the heads of dandelions are being born into the world. I’m glad to say that spring has sprung! It’s always exciting when the seasons begin to change at Chimps Inc. As most of us know, chimps in the wild don’t experience such temperature and season variance as they do here at the sanctuary. Whenever there is a weather change, it is a new set of challenges for staff and volunteers, but also a new opportunity for enrichment. Although we humans tend to view the dandelion bloom as an epidemic, for Patti it is an abundant harvest. One of her favorite treats garnishing the very ground she walks on and allowing for natural forage. They provide Patti the opportunity to forage like a wild chimp, for that time she spends every day picking flowers in┬áthe big outdoor enclosure. It is beautiful to see, and I’m thankful every spring Sunday morning for having pushed myself out of bed.~Kori Sparks, Volunteer
