The Garden Hose Thieves

The Garden Hose Thieves

Today I stumbled upon two mischievous chimpanzees; one going by the name of Jackson, and the other by CJ, which fittingly, stands for Calamity Jane. At first I was just passing by and was distracted by the ever so playful Mr. Jackson. He caught my attention by initiating a game of chase with me, and then we proceeded to make funny faces together. A few minutes in, I glimpsed to my left and discovered that CJ had pulled an entire garden hose into the enclosure. As an intern, this is not my duty to mediate this type of situation, although the following events were quite entertaining to watch. I called the caregivers over on my radio saying they might just maybe want to check this out.

One caregiver replied over the radio, “never a dull moment at Chimps, Inc.” One of our caregivers, Rachel, came over bearing two Red Vines, a highly valued but rarely received treat. However, these were only to be received in exchange for the garden hose. As Rachel offered Jackson and CJ the Red Vines, it was clear both chimps were hesitant to give back the hose. It looked as though the two were plotting and whispering, composing a plan. Topo, Patti, and Emma came over to watch from another outdoor enclosure. Everyone wanted to see what all the commotion was about. But of course, now they all wanted Red Vines too! CJ gave in and began to reel the hose back out to Rachel, while Jackson took a pointy stick and waved it at Rachel. Once the hose was almost completely out, Jackson bit one large hole in it, and thus only received half of his Red Vine. Hurray, CJ, for (almost) saving the day!
