The Chimps Play With Mirrors

The Chimps Play With Mirrors

It is rare to find an item for enrichment that all the chimps can enjoy. As caregivers, we always appreciate opportunities to stimulate the chimps lives without the use of food. Last week, the chimps received a donation of mirrors from our Amazon Wish List. All of the chimps found their own ways to use them. Thiele is especially fond of mirrors and spent time examining herself, moving her lips as she looked at her face. Jackson seemed especially curious about the chimp in his reflection. One afternoon when all of the mirrors were being used, Jackson pour his water onto the bench and and spent time pointing to his nose and his teeth while looking into this reflective surface he had created! He even made a place face over and over again while looking intently into this small puddle. Later, I spotted Jackson using a mirror to see parts of his body that he couldn’t normally see, examining a miniscule scratch on his ear with the mirror. Once we caught Jackson doing this, of course we still made a big deal about this scratch for Jackson’s sake, though it was small. Topo discovered that mirrors could not only be used to look at yourself but could be used to look at other people! We spied him using the mirror to peek around corners and see when people were about to walk by. The chimps found a variety of uses for these handheld mirrors and I have no doubt that the chimps’ intelligence and ingenuity will uncover even more uses for them. This enrichment item was an absolute hit! THANK YOU again to our wonderful supporters for donating these mirrors and providing seemingly endless entertainment for the chimps.
