The Chimps Have A Spa Day

The Chimps Have A Spa Day

Well, maybe not quite a spa day but we do have ways of pampering the chimps and taking care of their health without them even realizing it! The dry climate of Bend, Oregon can take its toll on all of our skin, human and chimp alike. As the chimps would likely eat lotion , one of the ways that we help keep the chimps skin nice and moisturized is by using olive oil. Sometimes we just spray their hands and feet with a spray bottle but during the summer months we have an even more fun way to moisturize! The chimps enjoy kiddie pools in their enclosures, filled with water and frozen fruit. Their happy grunts and squeaks as they fish for frozen goodies tell us that they really enjoy this summer enrichment. By adding a cup of olive oil to the kiddie pool, the chimps get olive oil on their hands and arms, then it spreads through the rest of their skin as they groom each other or touch their own hair. This week, Patti especially seemed to be enjoying the kiddie pools. While frozen strawberries floated on top, Patti was more interested in the frozen apricots which had sunk all the way to the bottom of the pool, and she was determined to collect them all! Patti was up to her elbows in the water and really got the full benefit of this enrichment. She stayed cool in the 80 degree weather, kept busy and entertained, ate tasty frozen fruit, and took care of her skin all in one!
