The Chimps Get Their Nails Done

The Chimps Get Their Nails Done

This week, I set out to trim the chimps fingernails. Some of them manage to keep them pretty short and tidy all on their own, while others definitely need some assistance. Thiele is one chimp who especially seemed to enjoy having her nails done and was happy to let me trim and file them all I wanted as long as she was kept busy chewing on the pretzels and blueberries I’d give her as a reward after each nail was finished. This didn’t surprise me, as she often enjoys having her toenails painted as well. Thiele stuck all her fingers straight out through the mesh and casually looked away as if she were at a salon. She then examined the work I had done on her fingers as I began on her toes. Topo found the whole activity hilarious for some reason and laughed and smiled the entire time I was trimming his nails. Patti had managed to keep her nails pretty immaculate already but I did a little filing anyway to keep her in the practice of it and because she was very eager to have her nails done in exchange for treats. Jackson was chewing on a hang nail so I gave him the nail file to help get rid of it. Always preferring to take care of these things himself, Jackson set to work and very enthusiastically filed all his nails on his fingers and toes. He may have been too enthused with this activity as some of them ended up very short and crooked. Fortunately he won’t be competing in any pageants any time soon anyway.
