The Chimps Get New Toys!

The Chimps Get New Toys!

Today the Chimps had some very curious and generous visitors from a local Girl Scouts troop and a local Cub Scouts troop.  Several months ago, the Girl Scouts had worked with a few local businesses and groups including: Bend Pet Express, CE Lovejoy’s, Riverside Animal Clinic, Mrs. Boswell’s class of 5th graders at St Francis Elementary, The Red Hat Society of Bly, Oregon, BEAT Children’s Theater, and Remax; to help set up a Toy Drive for the chimps to supply the chimps with some new toys for enrichment. On Saturday after collecting the drop off bins, the Scouts came to meet and spend the beautiful afternoon learning about chimps. I was astonished with how well the community responded to their toy drive. We were gifted with so many toys, movies, stuffed animals, and blankets. All the chimps were ecstatic when the caregivers were passing out stuffed animals during their meet and greet, especially Jackson who received a horse stuffed animal and was seen multiple times throughout the day grooming his new toy. On Sunday, we passed out goodie boxes that the Cub Scouts had made for each chimp. Once the chimps opened the boxes they found a large pinecone covered in peanut butter that had been rolled in sunflower seeds. It was an exciting day for the chimps because they could be heard pan-hooting all day!

The chimps, caregivers, volunteers, and interns are eternally grateful for all the support from the community. We look forward to surprising the chimps with new toys to play with everyday. Thank you!
