Tube Enrichment for the Chimps

Tube Enrichment for the Chimps

Last week we made some enrichment using the cardboard tubes that we receive from the local newspaper. I smeared peanut butter and some honey on the inside and then stuffed in peanuts, raisins, and dried apricots, shaking the tube around to get the treats to stick to the sides.

The next day, when we put them in the enclosures I noticed Thiele working very hard to get things out of it. After reaching everything she could with her hands, she looked around, grabbed a piece of paper and ripped off a piece with her mouth. She then shoved it into the hole, pulled it back out and inspected it for goodies. After she had gotten everything she could out of it with that method, she grabbed a handful of shredded paper and did the same. She is so smart!

Later I saw Patti working on the same tube and she was picking it up vertically and smashing it on the ground, trying to get something out of it. Unfortunately, I think Thiele had gotten it all! Jackson also had a go at it, but was quickly deterred when he realized that most of the goods had already been claimed. What a great enrichment item that would entertain three different chimps for a long time, though!
