Silly Goose Topo

Silly Goose Topo

When I arrived at the sanctuary this morning, Topo was in an exceptionally good mood (most likely because the chimps get sweet rice for breakfast every Friday, their favorite, but I’m going to pretend it was because he was so happy to see me…) As soon as I walked into the Chimp House, he jumped up, opened his mouth in a playful smile, and began hopping up and down.  I ran over to him and he wiggled his fingers through the mesh at me (an invitation to play) and then began to run around the enclosure while I chased after him (and by chased I mean slowly jogged because let’s face it, old man Topo just isn’t as fast as he used to be and I obviously had to let him win). The best part about playing with Topo is that he giggles when he’s having fun. Chimpanzee laughter is quite rare so the fact that we hear Topo laugh on a regular basis is very special. After about five minutes of chase, blowing on his toes and jumping up and down with him, he finally settled down and waited patiently for his breakfast with a big chimpanzee smile on his face. What a wonderful way to start the day!
