Recycling Enrichment

Recycling Enrichment

Enrichment is a huge component to improving the lives and overall welfare for the animals in our care. How to keep it novel and exciting for such clever individuals requires us to be clever, too. The picture you see contains a device originally made by one of our previous and most amazing interns. The structure had remained in the same location for quite some time and after while, became less used by the chimps. How to make it exciting again: relocation and presentation! While re-securing this 50-gallon drum to a different area, far from where it originally hung, their hoots, hollers and curious faces made it seem as if they had never seen it before. Woken from a deep sleep, Patti rustled herself out of a comfy nest to investigate the scene.  Holes previously drilled into the sides of the drum were filled with novel treats.  With the enhancement of broccoli leaves and raspberry vines from the garden, Patti, too, became excited to check it out.  How fun it was to recycle this creative piece of enrichment. ~Shayla Scott, Senior Caregiver
