Quality Time With Herbie

Quality Time With Herbie

We’ve realized recently that there is a shortage of stories about Herbie on our blog so I’d love to tell you about this special chimp for whom I have a soft spot. Because of Herbie’s traumatic background as a pet, he originally had trouble fitting in with the other chimps when he first arrived at Chimps Inc. Though he has learned to get along with the other chimps by now and enjoys spending time with them, he can still be a bit socially awkward and lacking in chimp etiquette. Sometimes, when being social becomes too tiring, Herbie really appreciates his quiet time (I can relate!). He can often be found alone indoors playing with a shoe or flipping through the pages of a magazine. Raised by humans, Herbie is always eager to receive attention from a caregiver or volunteer and I truly enjoy quiet time with Herbie. During my first experience keeping Herbie company, he lounged in an indoor enclosure quietly while I prepared materials for the next day. We watched Zaboomafoo together and Herbie’s eyes were intently watching the baby animals run across the tv screen. Sometimes, we don’t even do much during this quiet time; I just sit and talk to Herbie while he focuses on picking dirt or flecks of paint from the enclosure. It is always lovely to see him so peaceful, as Herbie is a chimp who often exhibits very loud stereotypical behaviors such as raking (a behavior in which Herbie takes a hard object and rakes it along the bottom and sides of an enclosure creating a very loud and stressful noise.) It is such an honor that Herbie allows me to spend this quiet, peaceful time with him and I am always please to walk inside and see his sweet, happy face.
