Linky, the only Canadian lynx living at Chimps Inc., found a permanent home with us on September 19, 2011. He was approximately 13 years old when he arrived in Oregon. Originally rescued by a sanctuary in Ramona, California, Linky was found wandering the streets of La Jolla. With no records or proof of origins, the only indication of his past was his four declawed feet and a broken chain tightly wound around his neck. At the time Chimps Inc. was already home to another older lynx, Alfie, whose mother and lifelong companion had recently passed away. In looking for a companion for Alfie we contacted the California sanctuary. As sad as they were to see him go, Linky’s caregivers felt that he would make a suitable companion for Alfie and he would enjoy the snowy Central Oregon climate.
Since his arrival in 2011, Linky has gained comfort and confidence in his life at the sanctuary. His large outdoor habitat provides many opportunities for him to express natural behaviors characteristic of his wild origins. Although Linky is declawed, many forms of wildlife occasionally find their way into his home, providing him the chance to stalk and hunt.
Lynx are beautiful and awe inspiring animals, and because of that they and other exotic cats have become popular within the pet industry. While cute and cuddly when they are small, they quickly grow up to be powerful, dangerous and expensive pets. As a result, many pet owners resort to inhumane management tactics such as declawing their paws and removing their teeth. Others sell them to roadside zoos or other facilities where they are exploited for public entertainment. Big cats are wild animals and deserve to be treated as such. Support legislation to stop the breeding of exotic cats and keep them out of the pet trade and entertainment industry!

Most of the residents at Chimps Inc. arrived here after years of living in substandard conditions in the entertainment industry or private sector. Each of their stories are different and many are heartbreaking, but there is a common thread in every case: an emotional being that deserves a second chance at life in a permanent, loving sanctuary. By symbolically adopting a resident, you are helping to provide spacious indoor and outdoor enclosures, connections to “family” groups, stimulating enrichment, and fresh, natural foods in a peaceful environment.
For a donation of $10/month, you will receive a beautiful adoption package complete with an informative biography, personalized adoption certificate, glossy photograph, an animal fact sheet, and a subscription to our quarterly newsletter. You will also receive biannual updates on your adoptee.
*PLEASE NOTE: Adoptions are symbolic only. The animal does not actually go home with you. Donations made via animal adoption are used for the care, feeding and maintenance of the animals.
