Patti and the Worm

Patti and the Worm

Going around to hand out nightly treats with Chimps Inc. founder, Lesley, is always fun. It is amazing to watch how these chimpanzees interact with a person whom they’ve known for so many years, and something interesting always happens. This week, while passing out treats, we noticed that Patti had a giant earthworm on her arm. These chimps have a tendency to freak out a little bit when something foreign or gross is on them, and usually brush it off dramatically. Perhaps it was because Lesley was holding fresh pineapple and Patti was too distracted to notice, but she couldn’t seem to care less about her squirmy passenger. For several minutes we tried to point it out to her until Patti casually looked down at the earth worm and very gently picked it up and put it in the dirt so as not to harm it. Chimpanzees in the wild would happily eat a worm but Patti didn’t even consider it and it was lovely to see her be so gentle with something so small and delicate and let it just go on its way.
