Patti and the Banana Peels

Patti and the Banana Peels

Here at the sanctuary we dehydrate a lot of fruit to use for enrichment and treats. The other day I dehydrated over 25 bananas and ended with a pile of 25 banana peels. What do you with that many left over banana peels you ask? You feed them to Patti of course! I went outside to the front enclosure where Patti was hanging out and relaxing on the beautiful sunny day. I called her name and showed her what I had in my hands. She immediately got intrigued and hustled over to where I was standing on the other side of the fence. I started throwing the banana peels on the top of the enclosure and all of a sudden she climbed the fence faster than any chimp I had seen the sanctuary. She started grabbing all of the banana peels while strategizing how to get the difficult ones of the top of the enclosure. Topo and Emma noticed all of the amazing treats that were being thrown on top of the enclosure and decided that they wanted to join in on the fun; however, Patti was not fond of that idea. She grabbed every last banana peel that I had thrown at that location (about 10) and shoved them all in her mouth so that the other two could not steal her tasty treats. At this point she had a small crowd of interns watching her and she glanced up with a smile full of banana peels and two fellow chimps left empty handed. Patti looked very pleased with herself and enjoyed every last bit. But don’t worry, Topo and Emma each got their own handful of banana peels to enjoy too!
