Lazing on a Rainy Afternoon

Lazing on a Rainy Afternoon

It’s impressive how quickly the weather changes around here; just yesterday we enjoyed a beautiful sunny day, and this afternoon it’s cold and rainy outside. It’s not exactly a ‘playing outside in the sunshine’ kind of day, and most of the chimps are bundled up all snug for the afternoon- Patti and Thiele are snoozing in the Chimp House, and Jackson and Topo are sitting under cover in a pile of blankets enjoying a grooming session. Herbie’s choice of venue for an afternoon nap may have needed some more thought; he was sitting outside, exposed to the weather. Apparently undeterred by the light shower, Herbie just carried on grooming his blanket. He then lay on top of the blanket and rolled on his back, kicking his legs in the air, and a contented look on his face. I was intrigued to see Herbie sit up and start rubbing his arms with the blanket, as if drying with a towel. Chimpanzees aren’t naturally fond of rain and getting wet, and are certainly not averse to using tools in their environment creatively to achieve their desired outcome, so it would not be surprising if Herbie was indeed drying himself in this manner. Still, I think Patti and Thiele may still have the right idea- it’s a stay indoors sort of a day!
