Kiddie Pool Fun

Kiddie Pool Fun

The other day, one of the caregivers decided that the chimps might enjoy playing with a sudsy kiddie pool. So we brought a kiddie pool out into the front enclosure, filled it with water and a bit of dish soap, added some optional playthings, and excitedly stuck around to see what the chimps would think. Topo, Emma and Thiele soon headed into the enclosure, and they immediately noticed the new enrichment left out for them! Emma grabbed a sponge from the pool and happily put herself to work, wiping her sponge on several of the harder structures in the enclosure. She didn’t even mind when she set her sponge on the ground and it became saturated with more dirt and sawdust than soap! Meanwhile, Topo was the most interested in the pool and the suds. Over and over, Topo stuck out his lips and dipped them into the pool, ending up with a little white mustache and a mouth full of suds! Though these two were fun to watch playing around with the day’s enrichment, I have to admit that my favorite personality to see emerge during this time was Thiele. While Topo and Emma were engaged with the mystery of the soapy pool, Thiele took advantage! She had her eyes set on one goal, and that was foraging. Thiele showed her surprisingly agile side as she quickly swung around the enclosure, collecting all the frozen berries and berry smoothies that the interns and volunteers had just scattered about! At one point I looked over at the three chimps, and what I saw was Emma scrubbing dirt onto the wall, Topo licking suds, and Thiele swinging from the ceiling with two cups of frozen berry smoothie balanced carefully in her mouth. Let it be known that these chimps have personality!
