Jackson the Improviser

The chimps have been engrossed with the recent unbreakable mirror donations we have received recently, and Jackson simply can’t get enough of looking at his handsome self. Recently, when a mirror isn’t handy, we have seen him on multiple occasions creating puddles in which to gaze at his reflection. We were lucky enough to catch one of these instances on video the other day as he was lounging in one of the aerial tunnels. Though the following clip is only a couple of minutes long, the actual scene lasted for over 20 minutes. In the video, he waggles his head from side to side in his characteristic play face, points out his teeth (which he normally only does to impress new people he meets), stares down his throat, inspects a scab on his ear, and generally stares deeply into his eyes reflecting back up at him from the puddle’s surface. It’s amazing to see how completely engrossed he is in a phenomenon humans take for granted. What wonderfully creative enrichment!
