Jackson Makes Soup

Jackson Makes Soup

Last week, the chimps received special goodies in recycled coffee cans as part of Herbie’s birthday celebration. After all the festivities had ended and the chimps had all calmed down from the excitement I passed by Jackson. He was sitting by himself on a blanket, very focused on his coffee can and was stirring something in it with a long stick he had found. “What are you working on Jackson?” I asked as I approached him. He looked up at me and showed me his coffee can. It was filled with water, small pine cones, and pieces of twigs. He seemed so content playing by himself and stirring his concoction with great purpose. It reminded me of my own childhood making mud pies out of whatever I could find in the back yard. This familiar childhood activity was a sweet reminder of how much we humans share with chimpanzees.
