Iceberg Lettuce Galore

Iceberg Lettuce Galore

Today was a great day for the chimps, and it was all due to three cases of iceberg lettuce that a local produce vendor donated this morning. What’s so exciting about iceberg lettuce, you ask? I have no idea. Seriously, I just don’t get it, but the chimps absolutely love it. They get a head in their dinner bag each evening, but the novelty of multiple heads of lettuce cannot be overstated. We spread an entire case around the Big Outdoors (our acre-large outdoor enclosure) and then split another case between the Front and Garden enclosures. Then out came the chimps, and I have to tell you, you’d think it was Christmas by how ecstatic they were. The pant-hooting as soon as they saw the lettuce heads strewn about every which way was near deafening, and many embraces were exchanged as they comforted each other through the overwhelming excitement. Patti scooped up three heads and settled down in a green reclining armchair, while Topo took two up to the top of a climbing structure to enjoy them from above. Jackson ate one at a time, pausing in each location he found one to gobble it down before moving onto the next, while Thiele grabbed two to eat up in the aerial tunnels. Once she reached the ladder, she paused, apparently contemplating how she was going to climb up with her hands full. Finally reaching a decision, she stuffed both heads into her mouth (NOT an easy feat) and then scurried up the ladder with ease. When Thiele and Herbie refused their lunch bags a couple of hours later, clearly full to bursting with delicious lettuce, I knew I’d seen it all. Thiele not accepting food that was offered to her? That’s a first for sure!
