Food Grunts

Food Grunts

Last week we had the opportunity to pass out some fun enrichment for the chimps. One of the local schools, MA Lynch Elementary, made the chimps cheerio necklaces. All of the chimps were so excited to receive them. After we passed them out, they happily scarfed down the cheerios and we were greeted with the sounds of happy food grunts. Listening to the low soft grunting vocalizations of chimpanzees is such a rewarding sound. It makes us caregivers feel that we have done a good job in making these chimps lives a little bit better. Sometimes it isn’t even new enrichment but their everyday food that they get excited about. Herbie loves avocados. He not only food grunts but screams with excitement when he gets one in his dinner bag. For dinner today they received cooked onions and Topo was all about coming inside to eat his onion. On special days they receive oatmeal with fresh fruit for breakfast from one of our wonderful volunteers, Karen. After she passes out the oatmeal, we can all hear the chimps happily grunting away as they enjoy their treat. For all of these chimps who have had such a difficult past, being exploited by humans and not receiving adequate diets, it is so wonderful to hear them happy and satisfied. It tells all of us that our hard work has paid off.  And it tells all of you, our supporters, that you have given them a much deserved and improved life. We wouldn’t hear those happy food grunts without you.
