Crab Apple Forage

Patti loves crab apples

The end of the growing season is near and the chimps couldn’t be more excited.  Around this time of year, all of the apple trees are dropping apples for the chimps to enjoy.  Patti, in particular, loves crab apples!  We began by placing some in the garden while Patti pant-hooted to let the others know what a good day it was going to be.  Our interns found many creative ways to decorate the enclosures.  Some branches were put on top, some hidden among the trees, and some of the apples were hidden in boxes.  Of course, Patti was first to enter the garden.  She crammed as many as she could into her mouth before Topo and Emma could get their share.  Topo and Emma still found a few but Patti raced around to get as many apples as she could carry.  Who knew she was so fast?!

I let Herbie’s group out next and they all raced through the tunnels to get into the big outdoors.  The interns put crab apples in trees, on the giant play structure, hidden in tunnels, and all throughout the rest of the Big Outdoors.  Jackson and CJ both climbed the structure with ease to get as many apples as they could find.  Herbie and Thiele took their time and found some stashes hidden on the ground and in the trees.  The chimps foraged for the next 20-30 minutes until all the apples were eaten.  A great start to a perfect Summer day at Chimps Inc.!
