CJ Wants a Pair of Gloves

This week I was blowing up latex gloves like balloons and the chimps seemed very interested in this trick. Jackson made a play face and laughed at this but CJ seemed especially interested in getting her hands on the gloves. Afraid that the latex glove could be a choking hazard I said “Sorry CJ, I can’t give these to you. I have to throw them away ok?” CJ watched intently as I tossed the pair of gloves into a trash can. This trash can was next to her outdoor enclosure, but kept underneath a platform, and blocked on all sides, so it didn’t occur to me that CJ would continue trying to get those gloves. I soon found her shoving a stick underneath the platform, trying to fish the gloves out. When that didn’t work, she searched the bushes, broke off a long branch and got back to work. She concentrated on this for awhile, but as we didn’t want CJ to actually get the latex gloves, (or be in possession of a large stick for that matter) we instead gave her a pair of pink gardening gloves. CJ was thrilled with this alternative and immediately began trying the gloves on. We soon realized that we had accidentally given CJ two left handed gloves and she spent the next ten minutes trying both gloves on different hands, trying to make it work. Once she finally managed to fit both gloves on her hands she set to work digging in the garden. This experience will certainly teach me not to underestimate a chimp and how hard they will work to get what they want.
