Christmas with the Chimps

Christmas with the Chimps
The cries of excitement filled the air as sanctuary founder Lesley arrived (dressed in a Christmas onesie and a Santa hat!) with the chimpanzees’ Christmas Eve dinner — and so began the Christmas celebrations at Chimps Inc. Leading up to the holiday, a large pile of presents had been accumulating under the Chimp House Christmas tree, and when the big day came, finally the chimps could enjoy all of their colourfully wrapped treats. The gifts were spread out in both the indoor and outdoor enclosures, with plenty for everyone to open. It seemed that the most highly prized presents were those containing something edible! For Herbie, though, it was impossible to top a giant Santa hat, which he proudly wore draped over his back, and then used as a blanket when all the festive excitement became just too much and he needed a little nap.

With so much Christmas fun planned for the hairy residents of Chimps Inc., one day of celebration just wasn’t enough, and Boxing Day became something akin to ‘Christmas Day Part Two’. The chimps were surprised to find Christmas trees had been erected in their enclosures, with presents and yummy treats hidden in the branches, and large gift boxes laid out underneath. Jackson was the first to discover the Christmas tree in the Playhouse, and for several moments just stared at it, apparently not sure what to make of it. Herbie led the way in inspecting the tree and the presents that came with it, and soon Jackson and CJ were also right in there checking it out. Outdoors, Patti and Thiele happily picked all the goodies from the branches of the second Christmas tree. As with their Christmas dinner, Boxing Day lunch was served in colourful gift bags… with a few more surprises hidden in with the meal. As the two day celebration drew to a close, I was treated to seeing a beautifully gentle game of wrestle and chase between Jackson and Herbie. Their laughter as they tickled, prodded and poked one another made it clear that they were ending the three days of Christmas fun on a very high note.

Christmas at Chimps Inc. sure is a whole lot of fun and excitement, and while all the humans are suitably exhausted after all the effort put in, the joy of seeing the chimps having such a great time makes it worth the hard work a million times over.
