A Special Bond With CJ

A Special Bond With CJ

As many who have been to the sanctuary know, CJ and I have a very special relationship. Since day one, she has been in love with me—which she expresses through frequent flirtations. In CJ’s style of chimp flirting, she droops her bottom lip and shakes her head from side to side. She almost always knows where I am on the property and I will often hear banging, or raspberries, or even clapping if I’m far away, and know it is CJ trying to get my attention to flirt with me.

The other day, I had a rare moment alone with CJ. No other chimps were in the playhouse, and she was able to relax and just sit with me. She was sitting on top of a pillowcase and just sat with me looking at me and letting me talk calmly to her. She walked away from me at one point and I guessed that she was done, but across the room she grabbed another pillowcase and brought it over. She tried to push it under the door for me but couldn’t get it through far enough and seemed frustrated that I couldn’t just grab it. She then walked over to where she could get it through the wire mesh and tossed it to where it was safe for me to retrieve. She seemed very satisfied when I laid it out and sat on it just as she was sitting. It was a sweet bonding moment!
