A Hat from Herbie

A Hat from Herbie

Herbie has found a new friend in Linda, one of our regular Tuesday volunteers. He gets so excited when she comes around. She hadn’t been out to volunteer for three weeks until yesterday, and so when she walked over to tell him “Hello” he got off the bench in the Front enclosure right away, and walked as fast as he could into the Chimp House. We waited and waited for him to come back out when Linda said, “well, I’ll go and say hi to the other chimps.” But, for some reason I had the feeling he was on his way and said “wait a few more minutes.” And sure enough here he came with two hats (one cap and the other a straw hat) and a magazine. He got up on the top bench, sat down, and started to rip off the peak of the cap. However, it didn’t move. He tried again, nothing! Then he looked around and saw another one on the ground, got down from the bench, picked it up, then back up to the top bench, and this time when he pulled the peak came off. Of course we both said, “yeah Herbie” and applauded. As soon as it was off, he pushed the cap through the little squares in the caging for Linda, but then he decided he was up too high, so he looked around again. This time he found a blanket, got down on the lower bench, spread it out and sat down to enjoy Linda putting the cap on. I think Linda felt very special because she wore the brimless hat for the next few hours! Wouldn’t you??
