A Chowtime Shower

A Chowtime Shower

Recently, I was undergoing chow feeding training with Caregiver Rachel, passing out primate chow biscuits to each of the chimps. I had been very fortunate up to that point, all the chimps had shown impeccable manners. I’d just fed Jackson his, and he’d behaved perfectly- sticking his flexible lips out and waiting for his biscuits as he sat on an elevated platform. Then it was Herbie’s turn. Herbie was sat just underneath Jackson, and I crouched down to feed him. Unfortunately for myself, Jackson’s politeness had just expired, and he proceeded to fill his mouth with water from a bottle and spit it out all over me. Poor old Herbie was ever so patient as I tried to focus on giving him his biscuits, rather than the mischievous antics of Jackson who kept filling up on water and ejecting it onto me until I was dripping wet. Of course, the appropriate course of action when Jackson displays this kind of behaviour is to just ignore him, rather than to give him the satisfaction of a reaction. I can tell you, it was a real struggle to suppress laughter as the water just kept on coming! As the troublemaker went to collect a second bottle of water, no doubt to continue my shower, Herbie managed to finish off the last of his chow biscuits. Considering the interference to Herbie’s chow feeding session, he conducted himself like a true gentleman, patient the whole time. Jackson, however, wouldn’t win any prizes for etiquette- but I can still appreciate a good laugh and a refreshing shower!
