A Blossoming Friendship

A Blossoming Friendship

Just like people, sometimes two chimps just don’t get along.  When CJ first arrived at the sanctuary last August, Patti was not the most welcoming hostess.  She went out of her way to make sure CJ knew who was boss, and became quite the bully. Even after everyone else had befriended CJ, Patti refused to accept her into the family and continued to intimidate her and push her around.  We tried tirelessly to get the two of them together, and even CJ put forth her best effort to win her over, but Patti would not budge.  She seemed to simply not like her.

Recently, however, Patti’s reserve has begun to weaken and, slowly but surely, she seems to finally be warming up to CJ.  Today Herbie decided that it was just a little too quiet (or so it seemed) so he began to display, throwing water bottles, banging the wooden climbing structures and screaming at the girls as he ran past them. Patti jumped up in alarm and began shrieking as he chased after her but suddenly, and to our amazement, CJ jumped to Patti’s defense and chased Herbie away from her.  He was just as surprised as the rest of us and ran off screaming.  As soon as he was gone, CJ turned to Patti (who was still very upset) and gave her a giant hug.  She didn’t let go until Patti stopped crying.  Herbie displayed twice more today and each time he did CJ chased him away and went to comfort Patti.  It was so wonderful to see the two of them embrace again and again.  I wouldn’t call the two friends yet but they certainly seem to be heading in that direction. Cross your fingers and stay tuned!
