November 29, 2008

Doors open at 2pm
Game starts at 4pm

It's time again for the Chimps Inc. annual Civil War fundraiser! On November 29th Chimps Inc. will televise the Civil War Football Game between the Oregon Ducks and the Oregon Beavers on 3 big screens.  There will be an all-you-can-eat buffet, a silent auction, raffle and much more.

As a non-profit organization, Chimps Inc. functions entirely on donations from our community and caring friends throughout the country.  Our event is held in a heated indoor arena at the sanctuary.  The Civil War game not only proves annually to be a fun event for all of our supporters, but it allows the ticket holders a chance to tour the sanctuary, which is generally closed to the public.  Additionally, it raises the most money for the continuous protection of our eight resident chimpanzees and two Siberian lynx.

If you would like to stay out of the cold Central Oregon weather and cheer on your favorite football team with friends all while supporting the only chimpanzee sanctuary in the state of Oregon, then make sure to reserve your seat today.  Call us at 541-389-5853

7th  Annual Civil War Game Fundraiser!

Chimps Inc. kicked off the month of December with our seventh annual Civil War fundraiser.  Our guests arrived for the sanctuary tour on a bitterly cold, but otherwise pleasant morning.  This was the first time we’ve had visitors since our new indoor facility was completed and inhabited by our chimp posse.  The clear glass windows of the new enclosure allowed our valued supporters to observe and interact with the chimps like never before.

Since our sanctuary is closed to the public, it is always fascinating to watch the individual behavior of each chimp as they encounter the unusually large crowds of people.  Jackson and Emma approached everyone with their youthful gusto and curiosity.  Patti and Topo were the only chimps brave enough to venture outside to get a better view of the adoring throngs of people.  Folks were amused and impressed at Patti’s ability to wrap herself into a cocoon of blankets to keep the chill at bay.  However, she finally retreated from the cold for a cup of hot chocolate in the climate controlled interior.  As alpha male, Topo is always very protective of his chimp family, so he greeted everyone with virile displays of noise and playful intimidation.  Herbie, the “Prince Charming” of the bunch, tried his best to be in two places at once.  He switched between the front outdoor enclosure and his playroom window, so he could flirt with as many people as possible.

Once the tour winded down, our guests made their way to the heated arena in anticipation of a great lunch and an exciting football game.  There was never a dull moment, as folks would stampede around the arena like enthusiastic Vikings pillaging delicious food and treasure.  This year’s football game between the U of O Ducks and the Oregon State Beavers was the most exciting we’ve hosted since we started this fundraiser seven years ago.  Although Oregon State finally triumphed over the Ducks in overtime, our Beaver fans tried their best not to be smug.

While not engrossed in the game, our guests spent a great deal of time bidding in the silent auction and raffle.  There were several tables filled with items generously donated from our friends in the community and beyond.  The raffle was particularly successful this year, raising in excess of $2,000.00.  Everyone who chose to participate in the auction, did so with a steely resolve.  Perhaps they became intoxicated with the spirit of competition from the Civil War game.

This year we had a very special contribution included in the raffle.  Julie Scott, Ester Jackson and Fran Bass donated a beautiful quilt, which they stitched by hand.  The quilt will be displayed at next summer’s quilt show in Sisters, and raffle tickets remain available until that time at $5.00 a piece.  Please contact our sanctuary at (541) 330-8159 if you are interested in purchasing a raffle ticket.

The Civil War fundraiser always fulfills its promise to be an exciting and prosperous day.  It is a very important event that provides much needed income so our wonderful sanctuary can flourish.  This year was no exception, as we raised over $37,000.00; exceeding last year’s net income by approximately $15,000.00.  This event would not be possible if not for all the support we get from our supporters, our staff, and volunteers.  Sanctuary friend, Cheryl Davis, did an amazing job organizing the fundraiser.  She has the amazing ability to cut a swath through the ensuing chaos and create a warm experience for our patrons.  Daken Handfield and Jeff Stone also deserves recognition for their tireless efforts in preparing the delicious food.  Chimps Inc. truly values the support and friendship of those who participate in this unique celebration of our sanctuary.  We hope to see you all next year!
