(continue) Open House

Chimps Inc. hosted our second annual open house on a pleasant September 4th afternoon.  We rolled out the red carpet for approximately 150 of our favorite and most value supporters.  Throngs of our chimp champions delayed their self-guided tour by first stopping to nibble on delicious hors d'oeuvres, kindly prepared by our big-hearted volunteers.  Others helped themselves to a thirst-quenching selection of wine, beer, and good ol'EarthH2O; yet many bypassed these temptations altogether, including the lure of our fully stocked gift shop, to immediately begin the sanctuary tour.  Of course, these folks knew that all of the tasty food and goodies would be waiting for them afterwards.

As always, Topo kept vigil over his chimp family while he made display after impressive display to show everyone that he is still the alpha.  For those who have never witnessed or studied the chimpanzees, some chimp behaviors are often interpreted as being humorous or playful.  However, our guests were all cautioned to never laugh at chimps, only to laugh with them.  Once Topo was certain he had everyone's undivided attention, he would settle into a state of curious repose.  It was during those still moments where Topo seemed to enjoy his crowd of admirers.

Maggie and Thiele remained in the overhead tunnels for most of the tour and quietly observed as people passed below.  Sometimes, Maggie's taste for mischief was briefly expressed y her showering those below with various debris and blankets.

Patti, always the wallflower, remained out-of-sight for most of the tour.  Although she did amaze several gazers with her prowess for retrieving treats from our artificial "termite" mound.

Herbie and Kimie had the run of our indoor playroom and entrance outdoor enclosure.  Herbie got a cardio workout pacing from location to location, making sure not to miss an opportunity to greet and interact with as many people as possible.  Marla O'Donnel, long time volunteer, held her usual tour guiding position besides Herbie's enclosure.  Marla always draws a large crowd that enjoys seeing the wonderful relationship between the two of them.  Kimie spent just as much effort to keep a safe distance from Herbie's enthusiastic displays of affection - which usually involved a lot of jumping and pant hooting, and noisy raking.

With the knowledge that Jackson and Emma will remain at our sanctuary indefinitely, this open house seemed like an overdue celebration.  Jackson, with his toothy grinn and is almost too big for his head ears, was way off the charts on the cuteness scale.  Everyone marveled at his gravity defying agility and boundless energy.  Emma was a it more reserved, but equally adorable.  She seems to have her "big sister" Maggie's pension for quiet mischief.

Although our sanctuary remains closed to the public, it is always exciting when our friends and supporters are allowed to see what has been accomplished with their generous donations.  We hope to see everyone again for the Civil War fundraiser.
