About Emma

Chimps Inc.’s youngest resident, Emma, was rescued on March 14, 2007.  Emma was born on April 15, 2002.  Her former home was Primarily Primates, Inc. (PPI) an animal facility that came under scrutiny in 2006.  Allegations against PPI included animal cruelty and neglect, overcrowding, poor sanitation, and multiple environmental violations. Throughout Emma’s early years at PPI she experienced several bouts of severe systemic illness.  Her physical, auditory, and visual contact with other chimpanzees was extremely limited.

Chimps Inc. was alerted of the state of affairs occurring at PPI.  To alleviate the burden of overcrowding and to allow the sanctuary time to rehabilitate itself, Chimps Inc. agreed to adopt Emma (and Jackson) and integrate both Emma and Jackson into our chimpanzee family group.

Although Emma had never been socialized with other adult chimpanzees prior to living with us, she has adjusted well to her new surroundings, and has several grand role models to teach her how to behave more like a chimpanzee.  Emma has shown considerable improvements in both her health and psychological well-being.  Her most significant step forward is that she is engaged in social grooming – considered the single most important activity in maintaining social harmony in chimpanzee families.  She can also be found playing tickles with Thiele and Patti, loves to tumble out of trees, and, imitates the volunteers by scrubbing down the shelves in the enclosures.

You can now adopt Emma!  Your package will contain a personalized certificate, a photo and a short bio of Emma, a packet of greeting cards with beautiful pencil drawings of our chimps by artist Alan Li, and a one year subscription to our newsletter. Chimp adoption packages make great gifts for friends and family.
